A litte bit about me

This is my story, so far…

SMALL BEGINNINGS:   I grew up in the small town of the Crowsnest Pass with two older brothers and a younger sister. It was the kind of place that you couldn’t wait to leave when you were young, but that you realize how great of an area it is once you do finally move away.

It seems that when you grow up up in a small mountain town, being outside and active isn’t an option. So things such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking became part of a lifestyle rather than just hobbies. And to this day, living in a small town and being outside as much as possible are still a major part of who I am.

THE BIG CITY:   I went to the University of Calgary and graduated in 2014 with my degree in Mechanical Engineering. After school, I bought myself my first camera, and took a trip to Morocco, Croatia, and several other European countries. I didn’t realize at the time how life changing both travel and photography would be for me.

After returning from Europe, I took the first job that I could get as a project manager for a small construction company in Calgary. After a few years of this, I found myself fairly miserable and in need of a change.

OVERSEAS:   This is when my partner, Hilary, and I decided to head to New Zealand to live, work, and travel for 15 months. We spent most of that time in the town of Wanaka where I worked as a bike mechanic. Dream job! Looking back, it’s by far the best thing that I’ve ever done, but at the time it was extremely scary.

After returning to Canada in 2017, I realized that I had to prioritize lifestyle and location over career. So Hilary and I moved to the town of Fernie where the mountains are beautiful, the people are great, and the biking and skiing is out of this world.

CAMERA AND TRAVEL:   Remember when I said I bought a camera after graduating university? Well, what started as an interest in taking photos of hiking trips and travel ended up taking over my world. Photography eventually evolved to include motion and videography as well. And along the way, I wanted somewhere to put all of my photos and videos, as well as the stories behind them, which led to me learning how to build my first website.

This is how my journey into this world of visual media started, and years later I want to help other people create their brands, start new companies, or take their businesses to the next level.

My Travel Story

I took my first solo trip after graduating from university in 2014.

The first country that I visited was Morocco. I got sick twice in two weeks, which by my account, is not very glamorous or fun. What I didn’t realize is that I also caught the unshakable travel bug at the same time. Since Morocco, I’ve had so many great adventures, visited lots more countries, and have been on multiple “trips-of-a-lifetime.”

Check out my travel blog Find Away Photography, where I  post a new travel photo each week and write about all of my travels and adventures.
